Sonic RPG 2 (InstanceTopic, 16)

From Compile Worlds

(Redirected from SRPG2)

Sonic RPG 2 was the first Sonic RPG idea conceptualized. However, its rival, Sonic Chronicles, beat it to the punch by being the first Sonic RPG released. However, the two are largely dissimilar. Sonic RPG 2's prequel was never made, and the 2, along with a subtitle, would deviate it from generic RPG Maker and crappy Adobe Flash titles with the same name. The game has several features, including a Time Attack mode and a VS mode. The game features 16 different zones, and many more areas to explore. It would be the debuts of Cornelia, the demon of the Crystal Orb, Matthew the Boarder, and Anonymous the Demented Plushie Maker.

Plot

Spoiler warning: the information below may contain detailed descriptions of major plot events. Feel free to skip past this section if you wish.

The game starts when Sonic and Tails are the last to show up to Vanilla and Vector's wedding. The Wedding however, is cut short by Eggman, who has gotten his mitts on the Crystal Orb. He demonstrates it's powers by spawning a base surrounded by an entire city out of nowhere and unknowingly sucking Cream into the Orb. Eggman makes off into the city, Sonic and Tails give chase, but are separated and kicked out. This begins a large adventure to stop the Eggman Empire from expanding from the power of the Crystal Orb. Vanilla later sends the Chaotix to go and find Cream, while Rouge and Shadow secretly conspire to overthrow Eggman.

While Sonic and the others spend their adventuring on the outside, Cream spends about the first half of the game trapped inside the Crystal Orb. Cornelia leads her through the orb, ultimately seeking to escape from the Orb herself, and ditch Cream. Cornelia offers to let Cream send a message to Sonic to let him know of what has transpired. Cream then unknowingly gives Cornelia control of her body. She then uses Cream's body to attack Sonic's party, but it fails. Cream is then able to tell Sonic about the orb before her injured body is sucked back in. Sonic's party arrives just in the nick of time to stop Cornelia from killing Cream. They escape and Eggman releases Cornelia properly shortly afterwards, and they capture Vanilla with the orb.

In between all of this, Sonic's party meets Anonymous, whom is also seeking the orb to expand his business and make himself filthy rich. They get in several quarrels over the course of the game, eventually ending up destroying his Plushie Factory. This marks the second half of the game as a race to Eggman's base. Near the end of the second half of the game, Eggman teleports Sonic and friends to Another World, where they meet up with Blaze and Silver, whom they help stop the Eggman Empire in Another World. Afterwards they head back, and prepare for an ultimate showdown with Eggman and Cornelia in his base. However, instead, they meet Anonymous, who has almost beaten them to Eggman. They defeat Anonymous. The story can end here depending on weather the player has collected the 7 Chaos Emeralds or not. If the player doesn't have all the emeralds, the game ends here with the bad ending.

If the player has all seven Emeralds the ultimate showdown will ensue. Eggman will use the orb to completely finish the takeover. Cornelia will then transform into Corledria, and Eggman and his powered up walker fuse with her. Sonic becomes Super Sonic and the showdown begins. However, Super Sonic is unable to damage Corledria or Eggman. However Sonic's party saves Sonic just in time, and they all join together to use the power of friendship to defeat them. They eventually shatter the Crystal Orb, killing Cornelia and reversing all of Eggman's progress of expansion. This causes the city and base to collapse. Sonic's friends manage to escape, but it appears that Sonic and Eggman are crushed by the rubble of Eggman's Base. 3 days later, Sonic and Vanilla fall out of the sky unharmed. A happy reunion occurs and the credits roll.

Spoilers end here.

Gameplay

Battle with Anonymous

The game play is divided into several pieces, usually following a pattern based on story flow.

Battle System

Battles occur in a full-fledged action style, completely unlike almost any normal Sonic game. The enemy is attacked similar to Sonic Battle. Players control one party member, while the others are controlled by AI. Players switch between battlers ala Sonic Heroes. The battle ends when all enimies are killed or when the active (player-controlled) party member dies. The intelligence stat determines how well the AI fights. Magic and other special techniques are given special commands, and players input the commands to quickly use them, thus avoiding menus and wasting time. The player can customize the commands for character specials, but each one costs SP, or Skill Points. Using all of your SP means you can't use magic and other special skills. When an enemy is attack, their HP bar is displayed, to show the player graphically how much they have withered the enemy down. The battle fields are also similar to Sonic Battle, except in that they would be in a pseudo 3D style. Movement is free, and there are no turns.

Zones

The zones play like the zones of any other ordinary 2D Sonic game. There are 16-17 zones. Seven zones contain Special Stage warps, so one may be zapped to a Special Stage to win a Chaos Emerald. Eggman is also always the boss of these zones. Each zone consists of two acts, except for the Final Onslaught zone, which is one act long, and the Casino Tower and Eggman's Base zones, which are 5-6 acts long o_O. The only exception is that collision with an enemy or its attacks will cause the player to switch to the battle arena to fight them. Score is then turned into EXP, and all EXP from the battles and zone score are added at the end and given to the player's party, provided they haven't died.

Special Stages

The special stages play nearly identical to those in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, except that they are flat rather than tubular.

Worldmap/Exploration Areas

The Exploration Areas are similar to the battle arenas in layout, but are actually full fledged maps themselves. These are often short, or are towns or villages where you can buy items and etc. No enemies are usually encountered in such places. This areas are often the source of many puzzles. They usually must be completed in order to access a Zone.
