The dark element is an element specifically associated with a dark alignment. It is practiced with scary looking things, such as blood, candles, ancient books and Latin. It is the opposite to holy element.

Like the holy element, it is often considered not a true element, and in a perfect world it would indeed not be, but many affinity systems have only one dimension (elements) rather than the two or three dimensions of elements and alignments, so they must fit in as elements.

Magic of a dark element is often called black magic. Unfortunately some games use "black magic" as a misnomer for "offensive magic". This includes Final Fantasy.
