Big the Cat is an anthropomorphic cat from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is a fat, slow-going cat who'd rather hang out with his pal Froggy than deal with the evil Eggman and his armies of goonie mooks. Unfortunately for Big, things don't always work out that way, and he often gets dragged into situations he'd otherwise have no part in.

Background Information

For as long as he can remember, Big the Cat and Froggy have fished together in the jungles of the Mystic Ruins. He enjoyed a quiet and rather sheltered life from civilization until the fateful day that Froggy ate Chaos' tail and ran away unexpectedly. Big pursued his only friend, and became entangled in the shenanigans of Sonic the Hedgehog for the long run.

Big is a slow, and easy going character. He's laid back, simple-minded, and naive to a degree. Big doesn't go easy on those who mistreat his friends though, and he goes to great lengths to aid them. He is a gentle giant who always lends his fat to a good cause. He is also rather sheltered and oblivious of the world outside of his simple lifestyle.

Big's abilities come from his blubber's ability to repel most attacks and withstand high energy output, as well as the fat's destructive properties. Big himself is also impressively strong and an excellent fisherman, making up for his low top speed. However, he is a terrible pilot, and his sheltered lifestyle makes him a bit of incapable when it comes to technology. His seemingly low intelligence is yet another shortcoming.

Sonic Adventure

Big makes his starring debut in this game, where his story involves chasing after Froggy, who's been possessed by Chaos' tail and attracted to Eggman's Chaos Emerald hunt.

Sonic Heroes

Big appears here as the power member of Team Rose, where he is looking for Sonic, Froggy, and Chocola Chao along with Amy Rose and Cream.

Sonic Chronicles

Big is once again called upon to use his all mighty blubber for the sake of great justice... and also to be the butt end of all of Rouge the Bat's emotional abuse. Like many of the other mandatory story characters, Big is practically useless in gameplay.

Sonic and the Secret Rings

While Big has no involvement in the story of the game, he cameos often and has a humorous dairy diary you can read as you spot him in various levels.

Many of Big's other appearances are simply cameos. Whenever he happens to be playable, he's a Power type character always.

Big has often been rumored to be in the game Sonic Megamix, and many mock-ups starring him were released. However, there is no official word either way.

In the Alternate SEGA metaverse, Big does not appear in the Sonic Adventure equivalent, but appears in the fanon game Sonic RPG instead.

Etymology

Big is named after his enormous height and weight, in case you couldn't see that.

Trivia

• At an impressive 200cm, Big is the tallest character in the entire Sonic series, outclassing Eggman, Vector the Crocodile and Vanilla the Rabbit completely.
  • This makes him exactly the same height as Ghetsis, which is a bit scary to think about.
