Gensokyo is the setting of all Touhou games. It's home to humans and youkai and other supernatural stuff of all sorts.

Because everyone worth noting in Gensokyo is female (There are a lot of dudes, too, but they're a bunch of wusses who can't danmaku), this has led to the phrase "everyone in Gensokyo is gay". So yuri pairings in Gensokyo are just as normal as straight pairings in real life. Unfortunately, someone had to go and ruin it by introducing Rinnosuke and a few other male characters that we never actually see much. So we tend to ignore them. Even Wriggle was first thought to be a male, until she was revealed to be a bifauxnen. Alternatively, some of those cute little fairies we've been seeing... maybe some of them are actually boys. Who knows?

Also, pretty much everyone in Gensokyo is insane. The insanity is contagious enough to ruin the "common sense" of good girls. And even though there are so many people capable of probably destroying it completely, "idiot colliding with idiot has always allowed Gensokyo to be at peace", as quite rightly stipulated by Yuuka in Touhou Mother. Well... everyone's pretty good-natured, anyway, and those not considered "good-natured" are too idiotic to be evil 3/3CirnoRumiaUtsuho Reiuji. Well... too bad youkai still like eating humans.

Somehow, Gensokyo leads to a lot of netherwolds, being the embodiment of oriental (Japanese, mostly) legends, the most noteworthy of these netherworlds being Hakugyokorou, Higan and Hell, the third being movable when overpopulated because IDKLOL. It's also got a multi-roomed heaven with varying leniency, made evident by goshdarned kids like Tenshi living in Bhava-Agra. Which one you go to when you die, only Xana-tan and friends know. Makai is not included because it's got living demons (Courtesy of Shinki-sama) instead of bad people that became demons. Yes. They're all dangerous. No word of how puny little shrine maidens or other humans are able to get there, though.

It does exist in real Japan, but you can't get to it because of the Hakurei Shrine and its gate, and other unspeakable border secrets. But, it's thought that if it were to exist in real Japan without any border nonsense, it'd be somewhere in or around Nagano prefecture. With stuff like European houses hanging around.
