Merlina is a witch in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. She is the granddaughter of Merlin the wizard, and only appears in Sonic and the Black Knight.

Role in Black Knight

Merlina is the person responsible for bringing Sonic the Hedgehog into the story book of King Aurthur and the Knights of the Round Table. She does so because King Aurthur has the sacred Scabbard of Excalibur, and is using it's powers to summon legions of undead knights to do his bidding. She guides Sonic to Caliburn, the sacred sword, and she sends the to go retrieve the scabbard from Aurthur and restore peace to the kingdom.

However, What Sonic didn't know was that Merlina herself wanted the scabbard, so she could preserve the beauty of Camelot forever. Then using the scabbards powers, she became the Dark Queen of Camelot, and began to make the kingdom eternal with all the powers of hell. Apparently, the place would be consumed by something called the Dark Hollow if the scared swords of the Knights weren't used to barrier it off. However, by the time the barrier was in place, Merlina and her Dark Hollow had already become too powerful for the barrier to stop, so Sonic and Caliburn had to personally deal with Merlina. Sonic then realized what Merlina actually wanted. He asked her "What good is a world that goes on forever?!", only to be slaughtered shortly thereafter by Merlina for his opposition. Just before she could kill Sonic though, Caliburn revealed himself to be the real Excalibur, and he and Sonic took on Merlina, defeating the Dark Queen. Afterwords, Sonic comforted Merlina, saying it's sad that the world will one day end, but trying to keep it alive forever may cause more problems than it would solve. He instead suggests that Merlina try to live what life she does have to her fullest.

Personality

It is hard to really say what Merlina's true personality is, since not much of her before her corruption is seen. She is for certain, however, sad that things must end. Perhaps one could say sadness and frustration misguided her, and that is why the scabbard was able to turn her so dark in such a short period of time. She also seems devoid of hope, since all she mentions were Merlin's apparent failures. Nevertheless, not much besides this is known for certain. So depressed or sad should suffice.
