Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the second game in the main Sonic series, and one of the most infamous ones. Building upon the original's engine and success, the game adds two primary features; the spindash, and Tails, Sonic's gay sidekick who can fly and jump around when it isn't necessary! It also introduces the damn fourth seventh Chaos Emerald, thus allowing Sonic to become Super Sonic. It also started the trend of having zones with only 2 acts each, except Metropolis Zone and Death Egg, which had to go and ruin it.

Story

One day after his embarrassing defeat at the hands of Sonic in the previous game, Dr. Eggman re-watches the entire Star Wars series and gets the idea to rip off Darth Vader and build a giant, spherical space station, not really aware his grandfather already tried this. Luckily for him though, there's no pesky totalitarianist government to get in the way of his plans, and he soon gets to work on building this masterpiece. Meanwhile, Sonic finds Tails fiddling around with his plane and decides to keep him as a pet because he's good at that stuff. Eventually, they notice something suspiciously large and Eggman-shaped hitting the atmosphere, so the hedgehog and fox duo set out to stop Eggman from reenacting scenes from Star Wars with his incinerating death laser and stuff of that nature.

Zones

Emerald Hill Zone
Wait, didn't we play this level before? Oh wait, that's Green Hill Zone. Anyway, it doesn't matter all the same, because it's still painfully easy and engraved into your head. Oh, and if that wasn't enough, it's the home of the Stupid Little Drill Tank, one of the most pathetic and retarded bosses in Sonic history.
Chemical Plant Zone
We warned you about those stairs in the first game, and now they're back to haunt you! We also are required to inform you of an indescribable purple water-like liquid that you may drown in if you're too slow. There's also some mean platforms that will just flip underneath you and drop you into said liquid. :<
Aquatic Ruin Zone
And, not content with having just one water zone, the game pits you right off the bat into yet another level plagued with mammal destroying fluids. There are also annoying pop-up enemies in the walls that try to kill you while you're already short of breath. But hey, if you stay on the high path, then it's totally okay~
Casino Night Zone
Those thinking Spring Yard Zone was chaotic will not like this next zone. Sonic and Pinball physics never quite got along, but that wont stop the level from forcing you to use these flippers in order to get anywhere. The place is also littered with boring elevator rides and...is that "MILES" I see written on the walls?
Hill Top Zone
Now that you and Tails have gone through all that, you are allured by the setting of another easy hill level...until you break down the wall and see there is speed-platforming segments over lakes of boiling lava. Yeah, we don't know why it's called Hill Top either, considering you spend more time in the walls.
Mystic Cave Zone
The only thing you'll find mystic about this cave is why the crystals on the walls and floors look more like lettuce leaves. There's also a huge pit with spikes in one of the acts you can fall into if you're clumsy enough. The hole is inescapable, so Super Sonic should bring a board game with him, just in case an accident happens...
Oil Ocean Zone
When they said the world already reached it's peak oil, they weren't kidding: this place probably refines about 99.9% of it! Don't try to go taking a tar bath though. Not only is that unhealthy for Sonic's blue, moist skin, but it also means one less life in the corner of your screen.
Hidden Palace Zone
And here, the plot takes a dramatic twist when we learn Tails is actually the guardian of the Master Emerald! ...Oh wait, you broke it to get into that series of tubes that doesn't work. Derp.
Wood Zone
It's a zone...made of wood...that isn't complete. What did you expect?
Genocide City Zone
YAY MASS MURDER! YAY SONIC FALLING TO HIS DOOM!...Okay moving on.
Metropolis Zone
The only zone in the game with 3 acts, evil renegade Staryu will try to shoot you down with Spike Cannon while you twist some nuts at extreme speeds...and that sounded totally wrong. It's also kinda happy and anticlimactic for Eggman's Base, yeah? Well, that's why there's the next zone...
Sky Chase and Winged Fortress Zone
Yep, the very first pointless Tornado segment. And all the small animals you free here fall helplessly to their doom anyway when you kill the badniks. Once you get onto the giant airship though, things are a little different. Being the first airship level, it sets the difficulty standard pretty high, so hopefully your blind jumping skills don't suck by this point.
Death Egg
The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny! Sadly, you wont be force-choking Eggman, because he runs into a giant mech suit and tries to sit on you. Sonic must deal fatal blows to the robot's groin in order to ensure his own safety, since Eggman was actually smart enough not to put any rings nearby. Also beware of evil Sonic robots.
