A mega mushroom is a distant relative of the red mushroom, and will make you grow over 9000 times bigger than your normal size. It is especially recommended you only consume these either outside or while driving, unless you have some desire to blow up your house.

Like most all mushrooms, these can come in question mark boxes. They can also come from item boxes, however. Mega mushrooms are the polar opposite of mini mushrooms and resemble the mushrooms from the original Super Mario Bros. in color and proportion. The fungi usually allow you to use your size to plow over everything in sight, including Warp Pipes! Now that's what I call a powerup! Mega mushrooms also have their own theme that plays for their temporary effects.

The Mega Mushroom also appears in Mario Kart Wii, and has the same effect as it does in New Super Mario Bros. The driver can the squish the others as they please while they run rampant through the course. Usually these can be obtained between 5th and 10th place.

In Mario Party 4, a different mushroom, still called a Mega mushroom, appears. This mushroom is a turquoise color, and is slightly larger than most normal mushrooms. It grows the player to twice their size, and allows them to roll two dice blocks instead of one. Another mushroom in MP4, the super mega mushroom, is a powered up version of the normal Mega mushroom, and gives you three dice blocks instead of two. Mega-sized players can squish others and make them drop coins and have access to special events and junctions on the board map. On Bowser's Gnarly Party, Bowser will challenge the player to a special minigame if they are mega-size (either "Panels of Doom" or a sumo wrestling mini game). Additionally, in Thwomps Backroom Ball, there is a special board called Mega Mushroom Madness that players may play on. It focuses on forcing the players to be giant in order to avoid unhappy events.
