Mushrooms are items found in many video games, notably the Mario series. They are also found in Minecraft and Terraria.
There are mushrooms in Mushroom Hill Zone in Sonic 3 and Knuckles too, though in that game they're far bigger than you and you use them as platforms rather than food... I guess the mushroom ate another mushroom in order to grow?
