Ghetsis Harmonia is the main villain of Pokémon Black and White and its sequels Pokémon Black 2 and White 2. He is the surrogate father of N Harmonia, the evil mastermind behind Team Plasma, and one of the most infamous evil characters in the series. He is known for his battle theme, where a choir can be heard chanting his name demonically.

Background Information

Ghetsis' history is primarily dealing with the formation of Team Plasma. He gathered the Seven Sages from all over the world, saved the Shadow Triad to ensure their loyalty, and adopted N, Anthea and Concordia, in order to use their purity. His speeches about Pokémon liberation enticed many people to join the team as grunt workers and serve "King" N. In reality, however, Ghetsis was assembling an all-star team of hand-chosen minions in order to make training Pokémon an illegal offense to everyone but himself, so that he may continue to use their power to rule Unova and possibly the entire world. To this end, he spent years manipulating N's emotions by raising him to believe that humans abused Pokémon and prevented them from becoming perfect. Soon, he gave N "leadership" of Team Plasma, manipulating him in the shadows to follow his plan. Hoping N would use the power of Zekrom/Reshiram to force humans and Pokémon to be separated, he gets irritated when the hero begins to interfere with his plot. When it does not produce the results he desired, he ripped N to shreds verbally and attacks the hero of the story, ultimately winding up in jail.

However, Ghetsis escaped incarceration and layed low for two years, planning his revenge against the region and reviving Team Plasma, with Colress as his new figurehead leader. This time however, instead of covertly manipulating people's hearts to get his way, he outright used the power of Kyurem, controlled by slamming his Ghetsis Cane, to attack the Unova region, intending to freeze the land over and steal everyone's Pokémon to achieve his goals. He nearly succeeds in incapacitating the new hero with Kyurem's power, but is stopped by N... which is exactly what he wants. Fusing Kyurem and N's Dragon, Ghetsis controls the most powerful Pokémon in the region. Despite this though, he's defeated by the hero and snaps, once again attempting to verbally defile N before being lead away by his Shadow Triad minions.

Ghetsis is a cruel and calculating character. He cares only about himself and his own selfish desires, and is not above manipulating and breaking people's hearts to attain those goals. Ghetsis is somewhat charismatic and unsuspecting, and takes full advantage of this in his speeches promoting Team Plasma's plans. Most of the time, he is also cool, though he begins to slip up when his plans are coming close to fruition. Ghetsis has an extremely violent rage though, and he unleashes it when he loses it all. At the end of BW, when N loses to the hero, he completely snaps, letting his rage consume him. Slamming his Ghetsis Cane around seems to be the only way he can quell this rage in B2W2. He is also vicious in tongue as well, doing extreme emotional damage to N during the final confrontation and berating Colress' blue and orange morals.

Etymology

Ghetsis' name is derived from the German readings of "G" and "Cis" (C sharp); the two notes that the Timpanis in his battle theme play. When played at the same time, these two notes form the Devil's Chord, the most dissonant chord in all of music, perfectly fitting for such an evil character. Harmonia comes from Harmony, and compounds with N's name to make enharmonic.

Meme

When Black and White were first released, Ghetsis' battle theme was mistakenly associated with the Pokémon Genesect. The chanting was misinterpreted as "DENNIS", and thus a spam of YouTube comments flooded every video related to him with shouts of DENNIS. The association lives on, and became even more livid with the ridiculous remix of his battle theme in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, brought to you by Go Ichinose.

  • Ghetsis is one of the few Pokémon characters with a canon height.
    • He is exactly as tall as Big the Cat, which a little scary to think about.
  • Ghetsis is only fought once in each game he's in; the least amount of times for any villain.
  • Ghetsis is the only Pokémon villain that tries to kill or otherwise incapacitate the player.
    • He gets brownie points for trying to freeze them with a move that can't actually inflict the frozen status ailment.
