Gary Oak, not to be interchanged with his game counterpart Blue/Green, is a character in the Pokémon series, particularly, the anime. He is arguably the most infamous example of the obnoxious rival character, having a squad of cheerleaders that will dress inappropriately for him and a red corvet to drive around in. However, as the episodes progressed, he mellowed out into a Pokémon Professor so the writers could put him on a bus to Hell, because, you know, they have to get rid of all the good ones.
Gary is sometimes used as a misnomer for Blue/Green in the games. While it is technically incorrect, it's totally okay according to Chao, because it's a meme. It also sounds like a more natural name, and kind of sounds like "Green". However, Red and Ash should NEVER be named after one another, because we all know Red is better than Ash.
