A virtual world is a type of world which is entirely emulated by a computer. Virtual worlds are fairly common in fiction, such as The Matrix, Code Lyoko, Pulseman and Project Nanako. There's a fair amount of controversy over the possibility of living beings being transferred between virtual and real worlds, though. Project Nanako gets around this by simply transferring an AI form's mind into a robotic body, and could potentially allow humans to control avatars using a virtual reality machine.
