Professor Oak, often abbreviated to Prof. Oak or just Oak, is the first Pokémon Professor in the Pokémon series, claiming to be the "authority on Pokémon". (Though we all know Oak studies Pokémon as much as The Professor studies Puyo.) He is an old, gender confused man, who has senior moments rather frequently, unless his grandson is there for him to lash at. He gives the player their Pokédex and Starter Pokémon, thus allowing them to go on their very own Pokémon journey. Oak is cited however, as being lazy by his granddaughter, because he won't go fill the Pokédex himself. Later on, he flies around to Johto and Sinnoh to host radio shows and hand out HMs randomly. He doesn't seem to show the same kind of respect to his own family though, which is probably why they live in a separate house from him.

The crazy old coot makes other appearances in the various spin off games, usually to shower their protagonists with even more fancy gifts and items in an act of generosity that may be pushing his sanity. He even appears to tutor the player through the fourth wall on how to play Pokémon Puzzle League with his very own Nintendo 64 controller. Creepy!
