An alien is a living creature not from Planet Earth, just like how a gaijin is someone who hails not from Japan. There are many varieties of aliens, but the typical science fiction depiction is a slimy humanoid. For whatever reason, they usually intend to take over/destroy Earth or at least its inhabitants.
