60 is a nice looking number. It's half of the factorial of 5, which means its prime factorization is 2×2×3×5. For this reason, it was chosen to be the number of minutes in an hour, the number of seconds in a minute, and, at least in North America and Japan, the number of frames in a second (Europe traditionally used the boring 50, but eventually caught up in like, 2005 or so).
