Anime is a word most often used to refer to a certain Japanese drawing style.

While technically it means Japanese animation, it's rather useful to talk about manga or art in video games by calling it "anime", so we do. Even though it's more precise to call it "manga style", anyway.

According to ZUN, TV anime is seen as the "goal" for any series, so apparently, once the anime is made, the series dies out. For this reason he specifically disallowed any Touhou anime productions. However, it seems he got even more drunk than usual lately, because he actually gave the go-ahead for one!
