Spell cards are a less carnage-causing way of violence used by the denizens of Gensokyo that know how to dakka it easy... actually, spell cards didn't exist yet (Though, bombs definitely did), until Reimu reached her mid-teens and got worried about getting herself killed from exterminating youkai that are really violent(ly careless). She did this, not her other ancestors, because she's a lazy bum who likes sipping tea all day long instead of training, only flying and getting serious when an incident happens.

Though, it's been said by some that these spell cards were actually thought up by a youkai who ended up winning some kind of contest of thinking up one way of causing less carnage, even with more violence. Not that it's completely confirmed, though.

There are rumors that other people other than those of Gensokyo also use spell cards, especially those that also know how to dakka. It's not really confirmed for now, though.
