Kagamine Rin and Len (鏡音リン・レン) are the second installment of the Vocaloid series and were released on December 27, 2007. Their family name was chosen by combining kagami (鏡 mirror) and ne (音 sound), with the first syllables of their given names a pun on "Left" and "Right". According to Crypton's official Vocaloid blog, the package includes two voice banks: one for Rin and another for Len, both provided by the voice actor Asami Shimoda. Despite the double voice banks, the package still sells at the same price as Hatsune Miku.

On June 12, 2008, Crypton announced that an updated edition, named "act2", will be released in early July 2008. Users who had bought the old version will get an expansion disc free of charge. On June 18, 2008, beta demonstration songs using the new version were released on the company's official blog.

Their only appearance in an anime is a cameo in (Zoku) Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei, where the two and Miku (and various other people and characters) try out to be the voice of Meru Otonashi.

Interpretations

According to Crypton, they are not actually brother and sister, but are reflections of a mirror. A second theory says that they were originally unrelated (perhaps doppelgangers) and that Kagamine is their marriage name. However, the most common interpretation is that they are siblings.

Relationships

Len is madly in love with Rin, so much so that it regularly leads to twincest, even when he is being a player and scoring with Hatsune Miku or Meiko. His heart always belongs to his beloved sister.

Rin on the other hand is just an attention whore. She is insanely jealous of Miku because she gets a lot more spotlight than her loli boobies do. Because of this she will lead Len around like her slave and abuse his pure innocent love for her attention seeking needs.
