Sonic Advance is, in gameplay terms, the only official candidate for a "Sonic 4". However, unfortunately, it just had to branch off from Sonic 2. Given that Sonic & Knuckles was released in 1994 and Sonic Advance in 2001, classic Sonic fans are still waiting for a possible "Sonic 5".
