A pylon is a giant metal tower thing that carries electricity at thousands of volts. Additional pylons are under construction in order to expand the national grid.
Pylons are often seen lining roads. A relatively well known disaster is for a falling tree to tear down the cables and leave extremely high voltage conductors exposed over the road. When combined with flooding this can cause significant numbers of deaths. Of course, there's always the idiot who goes up and touches it to kill himself, too.
