Sonic 2 Beta also known as Sonic the Hedgehog 2: What They Didn't Want You To See is a primitive version of the Sega Mega Drive game Sonic the Hedgehog 2 available for download in over 9000 different forms from various websites. The most famous two available is the Nick Arcade Prototype and the Simon Wai prototype. The reason these versions were not officially released by Sega was that the company didn't want consumers working out that Sonic 2 was nothing more than just Sonic 1 with upgrades.

Nick Arcade

The Nick Arcade version, named because it was featured on the show of the same name, makes it more obvious that Sonic 2 was just a rehash of Sonic 1 due to the zone layouts and music. Only Emerald Hill Zone is playable in this prototype the rest you would have to use level select and then debug.

Simon Wai

Once upon a time some random bloke named Simon Wai came across a Chinese Website with one of the Sonic 2 prototypes, he then downloaded the ROM and made a website dedicated to Sonic 2 Beta for his disciples. In this prototype only four levels are complete out of the twelve you can play, the developers could not be arsed to complete the rest however with debug mode you can explore eight of the ten levels which include the overrated Hidden Palace Zone which doesn't have it's supposed BGM (track 10 from the final version of Sonic 2) but instead the Mystic Cave Zone 2 Player BGM. The remainder two zones Genocide City and Death Egg really take their own names literally as there is nothing there except a fucked up screen so you just fall to your deaths should you attempt to enter.
