Alpha

Alpha is a Greek letter. Not just any, but it's the first of them. It's frequently used to indicate that some software is in development and hasn't had all the bugs ironed out yet. Though in the case of Web 2.0, beta is more frequently used for this purpose.

Beta

[12:22:39] <KasaneTeto> OK...
[12:22:51] <KasaneTeto> Because I am an idiot, I'm gonna have to need to clarify...
[12:23:04] <KasaneTeto> When does one use "alpha" or "beta"?
[12:23:14] <Keiji> alpha is development, essentially
[12:23:25] <Keiji> beta is when all the features are done but you haven't extensively bug tested yet
[12:24:43] <Chao> Or in Sonic 2's case, when you haven't even finished cutting all the levels out yet
