A product key is a string of characters that you need in order to make a piece of software work, to enable more features in it or to disable annoyances like nag screens. Product keys either come in the box if bought physically or are supplied separately. In the latter case, there are three ways to obtain these keys:

  • Buy one
  • Pirate one
  • Get a free one that stops working after a year or so, in the case of prerelease software (Microsoft just love handing these out)
