A coin is a small denomination of money. In videogames, you can often find coins just floating around in mid-air or obtainable by bashing your head on the ceiling. However, in real life, it's not that easy (and bashing your head on the ceiling would kind of hurt, too).

In Fire Emblem games, coin items can be used to improve weapons made in the forge; they can otherwise be sold for a whopping 1 gold. I'm not quite sure why you can't just buy a coin for 1G and use that, instead of having to troublesomely find them during levels.
