The Large Hadron Collider, often abbreviated to LHC, is a circular tunnel 27km in circumference. Yes, that's freaking long. Inside, teeny tiny particles are fired at each other so that some team of pro geeks can try to find the Higgs boson.
It took ten years to build and began operations in late 2008, although it got off to a pretty rough start nearly turning the Earth into a black hole. Luckily the scientists learnt from this and decided to ramp up the power much more slowly than they had planned...
It is thought that Alice Margatroid was involved somehow. Most likely, were it not for her, we would not be alive today.
