A boat is a vehicle which floats on water. There are two main ways to efficiently move a boat: catching the wind (sailing) or pushing on the water (by rowing or having some propulsion device).
Boats vary in size tremendously, from those tiny little ones barely bigger than your own body up to massive freight or battleships. It is possible to have a community live self-sufficiently on a ship, and we have all heard stories of such staying out on the sea for extended periods of time to be free of the laws of any country one might otherwise live in...
Historically, the main form of transport was by sea, and was even more important than road or rail. Thus we have plenty of canals and docks to cater for our ships. Indeed, perhaps the only disadvantage to sea transport is it generally isn't very fast.
