Yume 2kki is a fan sequel to Yume Nikki. The title's a silly Japanese pun based on how "2" is pronounced "ni" in Japanese. Well, it's their loss, as we can call it "two-key" to differentiate it from the original, whereas the Japs would have to keep calling it "The new one" or whatever.
Unlike the original, whose developer, Kikiyama, disappeared without a trace after releasing version 0.10 five years ago, 2kki is under constant development from... well, anyone, really.
Strangely, even though the original game was developed using RPG Maker 2003, 2kki is being made in RPG Maker 2000 (i.e. an older version, for those who can't count).
2kki features Urotsuki as your player character and a vast number of NPCs, including many humans, much more than the original game. It also has a much bigger game world, which expands with every new release as many areas contain inactive teleporters and coned-off areas. This means there's much more to see but it's also far harder to remember the route to anywhere.
Oddly, judging from the effects room at least, there are only 20 effects in 2kki, compared with the 24 effects of Nikki. Hopefully this just means the effects room will be enlarged once new effects are added, rather than that there will never be more than 20 effects.
2kki even has a very fitting, full length "OP", and a nice piece of mostly 3:4 music which plays when you access the computer.
