One is the unit or identity number. As such, it's hard to list occurrences of this number, because practically anything could be considered such an occurrence. While one does very little in most mathematical operations, it is a much safer number than zero and can often be taken as a default.

It's also the first magic number, but once again, this status is trivial in this case.
