Platformers are a well established genre of video games.
They tend to fall into one of a few subcategories: those like Mario, those like Sonic, and those like Metroid. This even includes pretty much all the fangames and indie games.
They're also often split into 2D and 3D. Very few actually good 3D platformers exist. Notable good 3D platformers include Wario World and Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc.
