The manta ray is an unusually bipolar species of undersea animals that seem to attack men from different nationalities at random. The most notable appearance was a truly evil variety that attacked Isle Delfino in Super Mario Sunshine, making the first Shine Sprite of Serena Beach nearly impossible to collect, and may be even more difficult to defeat than the final battle with Bowser himself. They are the basis for the Pokémon Mantine. Lastly, its relative, the sting ray (or possibly the same manta from Super Mario Sunshine) is known for killing Steve Irwin. As you can see, manta rays, unlike most sea creatures, have bad publicity.
