Puella Magi Madoka Magica is what looks like your typical magical girl series, but quickly becomes something far more meaningful. It follows a girl called Kaname Madoka being pestered by a weasel thing to make a wish and save the world from despair, just as her friends have been (or just started) doing.

It's too bad that said weasel thing is secretly evil, though, and is the cause of said despair that is there to save the universe from entropy. What.

Etymology

Puella Magi is simply Latin for magical girl. Keiji didn't realize this until seeing the translated soundtrack track names (the originals are all in Latin), at which point he was astonished at the simplicity.

Incidentally, Kyubey defines a "puella" as an innocent, naive girl.
